How to Create and Save Export Presets for Efficiency
Exporting videos frequently requires tweaking several settings to ensure the best possible quality for the specific platform or format you’re targeting. To make this process easier and more consistent, Premiere Pro allows you to create and save export presets. This will not only save time in future projects but also ensure you have consistent export settings.
1. Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Export Presets:
- Step 1: Open Export Settings
Once your project is ready for export, go to File > Export > Media. This opens the Export Settings window. - Step 2: Choose a Format and Preset
From the Format dropdown, select a format, such as H.264 for MP4 exports. Choose one of the existing presets that closely matches your needs, like YouTube 1080p Full HD. - Step 3: Customize Settings
Customize the settings to fit your specific export needs. For example, you can adjust the bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or audio settings to meet your delivery specifications. - Step 4: Save as a New Preset
After customizing your export settings, click the Save Preset button at the bottom of the panel. Give your preset a name that describes its use, such as “Web 1080p 10Mbps.” - Step 5: Access Your Saved Presets
Once saved, your preset will appear in the Presets dropdown list for future use. You can quickly apply these saved settings to any project, making the export process much faster.
2. Customizing Presets for Specific Platforms:
- Web (YouTube, Vimeo): Create a preset with H.264 codec, 1920×1080 resolution, and a bitrate of 10-15 Mbps for high-quality uploads.
- Social Media (Instagram, Facebook): Make a preset with 1080×1080 resolution for square videos, or vertical resolution for stories, with a lower bitrate for faster uploads.
- Broadcast: For high-quality broadcasts, set up a preset using MOV (ProRes) format with higher bitrates and frame rates that match broadcast standards.
Applying Export Presets to Multiple Projects
One of the biggest benefits of creating custom export presets is the ability to apply them across multiple projects. This ensures consistency across different video files and saves time in the export process. Here’s how to quickly apply presets:
1. Select Preset in Export Settings
- When exporting a new project, simply open the Export Settings panel.
- Choose the relevant preset from the Presets dropdown.
- This will automatically apply all the export settings you saved earlier.
2. Batch Processing with Presets
- Premiere Pro’s Media Encoder allows you to apply a preset to multiple projects at once.
- Export your project to Media Encoder and select the preset you’ve created.
- You can then queue up multiple exports using the same settings, which saves time when working with several videos.
Assignment: Create Export Presets for Common Delivery Formats and Apply Them
Objective: Create custom export presets for common delivery platforms (web, social media, and broadcast), and apply them to different projects to streamline your export process.
Steps:
- Create Export Presets:
- Open the Export Settings window in Premiere Pro.
- Create a custom preset for web (YouTube or Vimeo) with H.264 codec, 1080p resolution, and 10 Mbps bitrate.
- Create another preset for social media with 1080×1080 resolution and 5 Mbps bitrate.
- Finally, create a preset for broadcast using the MOV (ProRes) format with higher bitrates for professional-quality output.
- Save Presets:
- Name each preset appropriately, such as “Web 1080p 10Mbps,” “Social 1080×1080 5Mbps,” and “Broadcast 4K ProRes.”
- Apply Presets:
- Export a video using each of the newly created presets to understand how the output differs for each platform.
- Make sure to apply the correct preset for the target platform.
- Submit Your Exports:
- Submit the exported videos and note the differences in file sizes and video quality for each preset.

Next Lesson: Day 48 – Export for Web and Social Media
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to create and apply export presets for various platforms, improving your workflow and ensuring consistent quality across all your video projects. Understanding how to customize export settings for each platform will give you the flexibility to deliver your content in the best possible quality, regardless of the medium.
Up next, we’ll go deeper into export settings specifically for web and social media, focusing on how to compress video while maintaining high quality. Keep up the excellent work!
