Filter Practice in Photoshop

Welcome to Day 40 of your Photoshop journey! Today, you’ll put everything you’ve learned about Smart Filters and creative filter effects into practice. You’ll complete a full project using Smart Objects and filters to create a visually striking image. At the end, you’ll test your knowledge with a quick quiz on Filters, Smart Objects, and Smart Filters.

1. Review of Filters and Smart Filters

Before jumping into the project, let’s quickly review the key concepts:

  • Smart Objects allow you to apply filters non-destructively. This means you can edit, adjust, or remove filters anytime without permanently altering the original image.
  • Smart Filters are filters applied to Smart Objects, which are fully editable.
  • Creative Filters like Oil Paint, Pixelate, and Stylize help you add artistic effects to your images.

2. Complete a Full Project with Smart Filters

In this exercise, you’ll apply various filters to create a stunning piece of digital art. We’ll walk you through the process step by step.

Objective:

  • Create a stylized image by combining multiple filters and effects.

Instructions:

Step 1: Select an Image
Choose a high-resolution image that has details suitable for applying filters. For this project, a landscape or portrait image works well.

Step 2: Convert the Image to a Smart Object
Right-click the image layer in the Layers Panel and select Convert to Smart Object. This step ensures that all filters applied are non-destructive and can be adjusted later.

Step 3: Apply the Oil Paint Filter
Give your image a painterly effect:

  1. Go to Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint.
  2. Adjust the settings for Stylization, Cleanliness, and Brush Detail to achieve the desired effect.
  3. Click OK.

Step 4: Add the Gaussian Blur Filter
Create a soft focus on your image:

  1. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
  2. Adjust the Radius slider to blur your image lightly, adding a smooth touch.
  3. Click OK.

Step 5: Add the Emboss Filter
Add texture and depth:

  1. Go to Filter > Stylize > Emboss.
  2. Adjust the Angle, Height, and Amount to enhance the image texture.
  3. Click OK.

Step 6: Blend the Filters
Adjust how the filters interact with your image:

  1. In the Layers Panel, click the arrow next to the Smart Filter’s name.
  2. Double-click on the Blending Options for each filter and experiment with different blend modes like Soft Light or Overlay to see how they affect the final look.
  3. Adjust the opacity if necessary.

Step 7: Add Final Touches
Use additional filters like Sharpen or Noise for final details.

  • Apply Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen to bring out more details.
  • If you want a grunge effect, apply Filter > Noise > Add Noise and set a subtle noise level.

Step 8: Save Your Project

  • Save your work as a PSD file to retain the layers and Smart Filters for future edits.
  • Export the final image as a JPEG or PNG.
